Do you experience chronic pain?
Cupping therapy may be beneficial!
Cupping is a centuries-old treatment that originated in Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. For thousands of years, people have relied on this treatment to relieve pain and promote healing. Cupping therapy is used to treat pain by our practitioners at Dynamic Balance Physiotherapy & Vestibular Rehab Clinic.
This treatment method is also known as “tissue distraction release” in alternative medicine. Cupping is the application of round cups directly to the skin in areas of pain or tension. Cupping was first used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern societies.
What is cupping therapy?
Have you ever seen people with circular bruises and wondered what caused them? Cupping involves placing round cups directly on the skin where there is pain or tension. Your practitioner will use a pump to create the suction required to keep them in place on your body. For each session, your practitioner will leave the cups on your skin for several minutes.
During cupping therapy, our Clayton, Cloverdale, Surrey & Langley, BC physiotherapists place rubber or silicone cups on your skin. The vacuum created by the cups causes the skin to rise and the blood vessels to dilate. This relieves pain and induces relaxation while increasing blood flow and decreasing inflammation.
Cupping can be used to relieve musculoskeletal pain by applying it to areas of tension and specific points of high irritability (i.e., trigger points). Trigger points are thought to cause local and referred pain and are frequently caused by trauma or overuse.
Researchers are still examining the precise mechanism of pain control, with Gate Control Theory being the leading theory. The gate control theory essentially states that a non-painful input (cupping) closes the nerve “gates,” thereby blocking pain.
Nitric oxide is linked to muscle relaxation, as well as less tension and pain. Cupping has a positive effect on muscle tension because it increases local blood flow. Nitric oxide levels rise in response to increased blood flow.
